Lime Restaurant at PARKROYAL on Pickering Wows With Authentic Traditional Nonya Peranakan Cuisine

Like most foodies who appreciate food cooked upon order, it isn’t common to find one shunning the word “buffet” like a plague. But where most buffet restaurants fail, Lime Restaurant flourishes. Cooked in small batches to ensure quality control, Lime Restaurant boasts an array of authentic Peranakan (also known as “Straits Chinese”) dishes led by Peranakan chef Nancy Teo—with over 30 years of experience in the culinary world.

Bringing back the traditional Nonya heritage kitchen are classic Peranakan dishes like ayam buah keluak that impresses with its combination of chicken braised in thick and spicy tamarind gravy with black “keluak” nuts—its mixture of Peranakan spices allowing the unique taste of “keluak” to blossom; its black flesh yielding to its distinctive flavor profile.

One can’t deny that the heart of Peranakan cuisine is in its spice. Sweat it out with a bite of udang masak nanas, a dish of richly curried prawns that brings together sweet fruitiness and spice. While the spice may seek to overwhelm the palate, don’t be surprised to find yourself drawn to its robust flavors and spicy notes that tingle and dance on the palate, each bite bringing a deeper yearning for more.

Classic Nonya kuehs such as kueh serimuka—a two-layer kueh consisting of a bottom layer of steamed glutinous rice and a top layer of pandan custard—are also available at the dessert section.

Apart from authentic Peranakan dishes, an array of fresh seafood—prawns, scallops and the like—line the counters. What deserves a mention is the genuinity of the staff; kindly agreeing to peel our prawns. With such authentic cuisine and service standards, it’s a no-brainer where we’ll be recommending for Peranakan cuisine in future.
