Raffles Singapore Partners with Sipsmith to Create Bespoke Gin: Raffles 1915 Gin

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Singapore Sling, Raffles Singapore has partnered with craft gin distillery Sipsmith to create a custom gin that evokes the essence of Raffles and the craftsmanship of Sipsmith – Raffles 1915 Gin.

Embodying the beliefs and standards true to the Raffles brand, Sipsmith is a master craftsman at creating artisanal spirits; pioneering London’s artisanal gin renaissance. Said Peter French, president of Raffles Hotels & Resorts, “We are delighted to create such an evocative gin that simultaneously celebrates the past whilst inspiring future generations to explore and create.”

The collaboration is rooted in history with Sipsmith’s co-founder Sam Galsworthy being the great, great, great nephew of Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore and for whom the Raffles flagship was named after.

Wanting to create a promising gin that would withstand the test of time, Sipsmith Master Distiller Jared Brown has incorporated a balance of botanicals inspired by the Malayan peninsula jasmine flowers, fresh pomelo peel, lemongrass, Kaffir lime leaf, nutmeg and cardamom – distilled alongside some of the classic gin botanicals found in the award-winning Sipsmith London Dry Gin, including juniper, coriander and orris root.

“Raffles 1915 Gin is a stunningly smooth and inspiring spiced gin that evokes that moment when someone would have sipped their first Singapore Sling in the Long Bar in 1915,” said Galsworthy. “It is something which undoubtedly would make Ngiam Tong Boon, creator of the Singapore Sling, and my great, great, great uncle, Sir Stamford Raffles, very proud.”

Part of the 1% of gin producers to use the traditionally uncompromising one-shot distillation method with a Prudence 100% copper still (rather than with concentrate), it is no wonder that Sipsmith has managed to craft such a distinguishing gin that opens with a soft nose of jasmine and pomelo – probably the first to have crafted a gin with such; and underlying tones of angelica, nutmeg, cardamom and orange spice, with a bright and elegant finish.

For those who would like a sample of the custom gin, Raffles 1915 Gin is available at Raffles Singapore on its own ($26 per shot) or in a cocktail: Raffles 1915 Gin Sling ($28), Raffles 1915 Gin Fizz ($24), and the Original Singapore Sling with Raffles 1915 Gin ($33).
