Manhattan Bar at The Regent Singapore Launches A New Harlem District Menu

We first told you about Manhattan Bar when it launched two years back, and its unbeatable Sunday cocktail brunch later on that year. Since then, Manhattan Bar has not failed to refresh its menu, each time beckoning with more reasons to return. While we loved its recent SoHo menu, Manhattan Bar has come up with yet another menu based on another district of Manhattan, New York – in the culture-rich neighborhood of Harlem.

Inspired by Harlem’s reputation for soul food, Bar Manager, Philip Bischoff and Head Chef, Nicholas Trosien have introduced five new cocktails and four bar bites based on African-American influences.

We first tried the Lenox ($23), a twist on the classic espresso martini. This deceptively delicious drink – thanks to the addition of pineapple and lime – hides a potent base of mezcal and rum, flourished with Luxardo espresso liqueur and house-made grenadine. While not a deliberate move, its sour notes pair well with the newly launched fried green tomatoes ($16). Thinly-sliced green tomatoes are deep fried and topped with slow-cooked pork belly, chilli aioli and melted white cheddar cheese for extra oomph. It is decadent and delicious.

On the food front, the chicken and waffle ($18), a quintessential Harlem dish, is easily a crowd favorite. Bite size juicy chicken drumlets coated in waffle batter makes the dish both fun and convenient to eat, while the sweet honeycomb sauce and chicken rice-style house-made hot sauce added a sweet and savory dimension that was much appreciated.

Another cocktail, the Barber Shop ($23), dressed with an eye-catching red and white pole straw,  is reminiscent of Harlem’s many beauty salons and barber shops that lines its streets. While pretty, the concoction, made with raspberry liqueur, hibiscus syrup, cucumber and mint leaves is overshadowed, palette-wise, by the other drinks on the new menu.

It was tough to decide our favorite drink of the night, given all five had its merits. Some votes went to the Red Rooster ($24) – mixed with homemade barrel-aged applejack, St. Germain and Luxardo sangue morlacco – for its complexity and potency, while some preferred the Globetrotter ($22) for its refreshing quality and its accompanying pretzel pieces.

The latter cocktail is a mix of Ferrand cognac, lemon, Ferrand dry curaçao, syrup and house-made beer foam.

We had a taste of the Gin & Juice ($24) too, a drink created as a toast to Snoop Dogg’s album Doggystyle, and which we found to be rejuvenating and easy on the palette. A good drink to end the night with.

Or if you prefer to finish the evening with desserts, both the Southern cornbread ($10) and banana cream cookies ($12) are excellent. The former is served hot with warm aromatic barrel-aged maple pecan butter and savoury Pimento cheese, while the latter resembles a traditional cookie-and-cream dessert.
